TORR SCHIST

The exposure observed in the Torr schist is variable, with good exposure on the high area running from Meall Achadh Deisteil (NGR 81207609) to Meall na h-Iolaire (NGR 80757683), craggy outcrops on the western flank of Meall Achadh Deisteil give good exposure on their margins. The exposure around Torr na Ulaidhe (NGR 80507707) in the northern portion of the unit is poor.

The unit has an outcrop width of at least 940 metres.

The boundary between the Torr schist and Achlais amphibolite to the Northeast is gradational (c.f. Achlais amphibolite, and criteria for placement of boundaries). To the Southwest the Torr schist is in contact with three different units, Sabhail amphibolite (the boundary of which is not exposed), Gairloch schist (also in which the boundary is unexposed),and the Camas breccia formation, which overlies the Torr schist with an angular unconformity observed at Location 189 (NGR 80737630)

Exposed surfaces of the Torr schist have a light grey colour with a well developed foliation ("S" fabric) the foliation surfaces have aligned acicular amphiboles which define the "L" fabric. The fresh surfaces vary with the orientation of the section being examined. Sections normal to the foliation show a light grey, fine - medium grained rock (0.5 – 1 millimetres) composed of mafic and felsic minerals in approximately equal proportions. Sections parallel to the foliation show good alignment of acicular amphiboles (1 millimetre in diameter and 4-5 millimetres in length) and white micas, which impart a sheen to the foliation surfaces.

The general orientation of the foliation surfaces are striking to the north west - south east and dipping steeply to the south west and north east, although the variation in dips is not believed to be related to any major folding in the Torr schist.
