GAIRLOCH SCHIST
The exposure observed in the Gairloch schist is poor with only two small outcrops observed (NGR 80707643).
No major topographic features are associated with this unit.
The boundary to the Northeast with the Sabhail amphibolite was not observed, as was the boundary to the Southwest, however the disposition of the Camas breccia, which forms the boundary to the Southwest, suggests that the boundary is unconformable. This unit is also observed to be laterally discontinuous to the Northwest and Southeast being cut by a fault to the Southeast.
The outcrop width of the Gairloch schist is 60 metres, however the unit may extend under the Camas breccia.
Exposed surfaces are light grey-brown with a well developed foliation defined by a white mineral. Fresh surfaces of the rock show a fine to medium grain size (maximum grain size is 1 millimetre) with a light grey colour. An "L" fabric can be observed on the foliation surfaces, but due to the fine grain size the mineral defining it cannot be recognised in hand section.
The mineralogy in the finer grained layers cannot be determined. The slightly coarser layers have a mineralogy that includes: feldspar, quartz, and a mafic phase, however due to the fine grain size the mode of the rock could not be identified.
No structures where observed in the unit but the general trend of the foliation was striking to the Northwest - Southeast and dipping shallowly to the Northeast.
