CAMAS BRECCIA FORMATION

The exposure of the Camas breccia formation is good along the coast but inland around Auchtercairn (NGR 80367676) the exposure is lost.

The unit is associated with an area of low relief and altitude to the west Of Meall Achadh Daisteil running Parallel with the coast from Caisteal na Cloinne (NGR 80417595) to Leac Criaraidh (NGR 80147675).

The unit has an exposed unconformity on the Torr schists at location 189 (NGR 80737630).

A graphic log of the beds along the coast was made (See attached log sheets). undercon.gif (1133 bytes) still trying to get them in electronic form.

The general features of the formation include the rock types: breccia; breccio-conglomerate; sandstone; siltstone; and claystone. Imbrication in the breccia suggest a paleocurrent direction from the north north west, the units were in general coloured red with fining upward sequences being commonly observed, a more detailed description of these units is afforded by the graphic logs.

The unit is believed to represent an alluvial fan deposit, due to the angular nature of the clasts, imbricate structures, graded bedding, cross bedding and fining upward sequences. It is likely that stream flow processes formed the units although debris flow processes may have played a minor role (Scholle P.A. and Spearing D. 1982).
