ABSTRACT
An area of approximately 5-6 kilometres was mapped in the Gairloch district of Wester Ross, Highland Region, Scotland.
The mapping area was to the south of the A832 Gairloch to Poolewe road. The extent of the area mapped was a strip running parallel to the road, effectively across strike starting at the east end of Loch Tollaidh (Easting 85) running down to the coast then along the coast to Caisteal na Cloinne (Grid reference 80417595).
The mapping area varied in height from 1146 feet (Meall Airigh Mhic Criadh NGR 83177766) to sea level with most of the mapping area above 400 feet.
The lithologies observed may be broadly subdivided into three groups:
1. Lewisian gneissose terrain.
2. Gairloch supracrustal group of metasediments and metavolcanic rocks.
3. Torridonian sedimentary rocks.
Ten major units were observed including: Tollie gneiss Amphibolite sheet suite, Garbh amphibolite, Luibean semipelitic schist, Achlais amphibolite, Torr schist, Sabhail amphibolite, Gairloch schist. Camas and Druim breccia, and a series of thin units of Augen gneiss, schists, and amphibolites at location 212 (Caisteal na Cloinne NGR 80507587).
