Professional Information

Petroleum Geologist - Data Acquisition Consultant.

BP  Norway have pioneered the new step forward in drilling performance. Many exploration wells have been drilled using this process with significant improvements in performance and consequent cost savings driving BP  Norway into the top quartile of drilling performance - We have the aim of being the best in the world - we are committed to achieving this aim.

Essentially the process involves detailed upfront planning to mitigate the considerable risks associated with drilling offshore wells. The application of basic project management techniques to drilling wells is the catalyst for the change.

The key to success in a project such as this is the engagement of the differing contractors who will be performing services on the rig during the drilling phase - this is achieved by allowing them to create the drilling and data acquisition plan.

Put succinctly - Those who prepare the plan are those who execute the plan.

My role in this process is to lead the Data Acquisition team in the production of a detailed data acquisition plan which will fully meet the well objectives at the least cost. Essentially the years of offshore experience I and the rest of the team have are been brought to bear on the planning phase. We are the people who know how to most effectively drill the well.

Climbing

So it's raining in the Lakes and you've traveled all the way from London - so what you going to do?
Go to the Keswick Wall - nah you can do that at home, done everything on Shepherds - come and play on
our little outcrops, take a picnic (generally consisting of a six pack) and make a day of it. It's not too hard
(not too easy sometimes either) and there's always a pub close by.

Climbing in Rogaland, South Western Norway

Rogaland with Stavanger as it's capital has some of the finest climbing in the world. It's a pretty well kept secret and these web pages should give you a taste of the delights you can expect.

Walking in the English Lake District and Norway
Just a few of my most recent walks

If you want a comprehensive guide to walking in the lakes then you'll do just fine if you point your browser at John Dawsons pages.

The Geology around Gairloch, Wester Ross, Highland Region, Scotland

Under graduate mapping project :
This is the result of six weeks field mapping in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland  in 1984 - it is not a terribly original piece of  work, but if you are in the area then it may help you to understand the geology a little better.
