Caldbeck Moor Quarry OS Sheet 85 NGR 287402

Introduction

A large crescent shaped quarry, comprised of limestone of variable quality. Slower drying than Head End due to its easterly aspect, it is however fairly quick to dry. The limestone on the lower sections tends to be fairly solid but capped by loose rubble at ¾ height for much of the length of the quarry. The southern end has the better rock with the northern end looking unpromising for aspirant explorers. However, there are plenty of gaps needing filled in on the more solid sections of the quarry – get yer boots on boys and girls, fame and fortune beckons (believe that and you’ll…..).

Lack of belays at the top of the quarry tends to encourage soloing – emplacement of stake belays will be undertaken sometime in the future. Although this quarry is not as suitable for groups of novices as Head End, parties should be encouraged to use this and the other quarries to ease the traffic and erosion at Head End (please – some of Head End’s climbs are becoming like skating rinks).

Access

The council provides free access due to ownership of the quarry. However the track from the road leading up to the quarry has been blocked with a padlocked gate to prevent fly tipping. Whilst this has had the desired effect, it also forces visitors to the quarry to park on the road verge.

It has probably discouraged parties from using the quarry (you now have to walk 100 metres to get there!).

Approaches

From M6 Penrith – follow B5305 (Wigton road) past Sebergham up Doctors Brow. Turn left at the old String of Horses pub (now owned by Lime House School - private School at Dalston, a sad reflection on the drinking habits of my fellow Cumbrians). Follow the B5299 up the hill past a 90° bend (turn off here for Park Head) and over the Wigton – Caldbeck cross roads, continue over Caldbeck Common past Faulds Brow quarry on the right to the next cross roads. Turn right up the Wigton – Westward road and the quarry is about a mile on the left-hand side (before you get to the cattle grid at the top of the common).

From Keswick follow the A591 from Keswick to Carlisle until the crossroads at Castle Inn are approached (8 miles). Turn right and follow the road towards Ireby and Uldale. Follow this through Uldale village (Snooty fox pub – don’t talk about hunt sabbing around here or you’ll end up with a thick ear – good grub and beer –stays open late too). Keep following the B5299 over Caldbeck Common until the Wigton – Westward crossroad is approached and turn left up to the quarry (see above).
